Workshops

“The project was a fantastic opportunity for the pupils and staff to use resources not usually
available to primary school children.”
Heather Ward, Class 5 teacher, Hollybush Primary

The workshops comprise of an engaging and varied programme of activities with the aim of promoting the heritage of Leeds and raising environmental awareness. Leeds University Geography students have developed activities in collaboration with class teachers and the project Coordinator. The content of the workshops touches on many areas of Key Stage 2 curriculum and centres on the main themes of the project; the hippo bones, past environmental change, current issues of climate change, environmental impact and sustainability. As part of the workshops pupils spend the day at Leeds University taking part in activities delivered by specialists from the Faculty of Earth and Environment, Biological Sciences and the School of Chemistry along with a campus tour given by Leeds University students.

Thank you for letting us learn about hippos, I loved going to the University…I loved everything,
the hippo bones were good…. I liked the tour of the campus, plus the chemistry lesson about solids, liquids and gases.”
Yr 5 pupil, Ingram Road Primary

The Hippo Project supports the University of Leeds policy to minimise waste, conserve energy
and lower carbon emissions by raising awareness.
