Summary:

Trieste is a highly suggestive city on account of its historical location between three of Europe’s great cultural domains and because of its re-acquired centrality within a post-Cold War Europe. In this research, we use Trieste as a starting point, a prism for engagement with a number of wider themes, including the re-invention of new regions for Europe, monuments and memories in the context of contested histories, and the changing political landscape of Trieste’s waterfront. The research is being conducted in conjunction with colleagues in Newcastle, Durham, York, and Hull.
