The authority and particular attributes for National Park designation vary from country to country but usually involve rare or unique, landscape, biology or history. As such they are sensitive sites in need of protection and careful management. These very attributes however, inevitably attract significant visitor numbers with a consequent waste probloem. This thesis seeks to identify the alternative strategies that exist for the management of human waste in National Parks; the characteristics of the park and its management that have guided choice of particular waste management strategies to date;and the impacts that waste management have on the natural environment of National Parks. The study is international in scope and focusses primarily on mountain parks of the UK, Japan and North America.
