Summary

This research project assesses of the current EUROSTAT databases for regional migration flows and investigates whether more detailed and meaningful data are available from national and regional sources.

A review of existing studies of the relationship between regional international migration (RIM) and interregional migration (IRM) indicates that most research on the linkage has been undertaken hitherto in the USA where immigration volumes and social geographies of ethnic minority populations are very different to those in Europe. This project compares total gross and net migration components of RIM and IRM for a subset of NUTS 2 regions and uses multiple regression modelling to demonstrate the strength of relationships between immigration and internal migration and vice versa. Case studies are undertaken which investigate the relationship between RIM and IRM in more detail in three different national contexts.
