The map is a wonderful data viewing device BUT does little else!

• Maps traditionally present transformations - distortions of raw data

• they become instantly MORE useful when the data are processed to reveal any patterns and structure they contain

• The traditional model of

data => map => viewer

needs to be replaced by

data => map processor => map => viewer
