Some of the causes for the dislike of GAM :
- the deliberate attempt at automating the artistic science of statistical analysis was disliked
- the use of vast amounts of computer time wrongly thought to be an expensive rare commodity
- the idea of localized clustering was initially but incorrectly considered to be implausible
- lack of any well developed statistical theory
- a preference for a Bayesian mapping approach
- failure to consider data error as a cause of clustering
- a prejudice against data mining
- media hype, exaggeration, and high public profile that surrounded the initial results
