In general crime analysis and modelling ranges from the abstract to the realistic, and from the exploratory to the practical. Here we present a series of techniques covering these ranges which are either currently useful or worth exploring for their potential. Plainly we can't cover the entire range of techniques used or available, but we hope these are both representative and interesting exemplars. We start from the relatively pragmatic and work through to techniques yet to show their full, but very clear, potential.
