-
This page is for information about GEOG3600 Geography Dissertation Level 3 in 2011 to 2012.
It is Andy Turner's Web Page about this which he developed to help document and organise his role as a Dissertation Support Group mentor in this academic year.
This is the second academic year for which Andy has mentored on this module.
- Mentoring for most began in level 2 as module GEOG2300.

- "An Assessment of the Economic Contribution of Leeds Kirkgate Market to the Local Area"
- This work attempted to develop an assessment of the economic contribution of Leeds Kirkgate Market (LKM) to the local area by estimating:
- how much money is spent in LKM (combined with a local multiplier effect on this spending);
- how far LKM benefits the surrounding retail space;
- levels of interconnectivity between LKM and other local businesses; and,
- employment benefits of LKM
- The debate surrounding the future of LKM is introduced in the diseertaion.
- Based on a quantitative analysis of primary and secondary data, Hugo concluded that the economic contribution of LKM is far greater than is accounted for in previous studies which attempt to analyse the market.

- 2011-10-11 One-to-one meeting with Kathryn
- In preparation I read through Kathryn's GEOG2300 Dissertation Proposal Document and looked at the Radburn et al (2009) article.

- We discussed the topic, group work and progress briefly and then had something of a brainstorm
- Data
- Quatitative data on library issues from Huntingdon and 3 neighbouring libraries has been promissed for a period covering the recent library redevelopment and this should be available for analysis soon
- Structures and semi/unstructured interviews with librarians and members of Huntingdon Council and Cambridgeshire County Council
- These are still yet to be done
- Targetted interviews
- There are some specific people that should be asked about changes to the libarary, its use and its users.
- There are other council employees that should be interviewed.
- Brainstorm
- Defining what a library provides and detailing what Huntingdon Library has provided in the past and provides now.
- What parts of this are geographically constrained and how much of a libarary is about the local provision and user communities and the place where it is physically located.
- Libraries Museums and Archives (LMA) supporting information provision and learning.
- The JISC
- BBC Domesday
- The Internet Archive and referencing on-line sources
- Metadata
- An exploratory and iterative approach
- Are there things that can be identified both in the qualitative interview data and quantitative issues data?
- Iteratively exploring what is geographical about the library
- Background on Huntingdon Library
- The library moved to a temporary building and the site was demolished in 2007
- A new building was opened about 1.5 years later and the library merged with the local archive
- Demographics of library users and how this has changed over time
- How does this relate to the demographics of the area and how it has changed over time?

- 2011-10-07 One-to-one meeting with Danielle
- Topic: Out of town shopping: Proposed Sainsbury Superstore in Dorridge
- Planning decision due within the month
- Good time to be collecting data on peoples views
- Survey and data collection
- Literature review
- Telling the story and documenting the research process
- Need for original research
- The dissertation project is not a PhD and does not have to advance science or attempt something completely original
- Although there is much research on out of town shopping and on the planning of superstores, it does not mean that this topic is not a good topic for an undergraduate dissertation.
- If others are discovered to be studying the same thing then treat this as an opportunity, not a threat
- If this is the case, then you should figure out how to join forces or not, but anyway make it clear that you know of the existence of this work and make it clear what work you do.
