- Critically assess the contention that territoriality is "inherently political, dynamic and, by its very nature, controversial" (Blacksell 2006: 20).

- Reading books
- Demonstration of an approach
- Will had brought along the fourth edition of Flint and Taylor's Political geography: world-economy, nation-state, and locality book
- This looks like a useful book for the students
- Andy's procedure for addressing an academic book
- Look at the cover inside and out
- What version is it, is it up to date, when was it published, what edition is it?
- Is it easy to reference?
- Look in the front for a contents and quickly skim it (again looking front and back and then in the middle if it is a long contents list).
- Look in the back for an index, references, notes and glossary of terms
- Flick through the pages really quickly for a quick appreciation of layout and appreciation of graphical content
- Think about what type of book it is
- With practice this can be done very quickly by able bodied people
- It can be done stood by the book case in the library to help select some books
- Depending on how the book was arrived at, you are now ready to use it
- It may be that you have already dismissed the book and are looking at something else
- Next steps will either be to use the index and glossary or look at the chapter contents to choose a place to start reading or turn back to the graphics which may also be listed (usually at the front of the book)
- Referencing systems
- I outlined the main two forms of referencing using numbers and the harvard system and introduced the merits of both
- The number system is concise, the Harvard system which provides the author name helps the reader contextually in building an appreciation of the academics in the field
- There is a need for consistency in referencing in a work

- If difficulties persist please contact me and we can try to deal with this ahead of the next group meeting when this will be an item on the agend.
- Changing to BSc how and when?
- Andy to initiate liaison in this regard...
- How much to read?
- The short answer is to read a lot, as much as you can fit in without forgetting too much.
- A longer answer is:
- Read appropriate material and target this to the completion of assignments.
- It is important in some fields of study to gain an appreciation of who is writing the literature and what their arguments are and how these have evolved.
- It is also important to appreciate how much literature there is written and to understand that there is more than a lifetimes reading to read everything on many subjects.
- Evidence of reading
- Some discussion of items referenced in module reading lists
- Flint C., Taylor P.J., (2007) Political geography: world-economy, nation-state, and locality
