(December 2002 - Present [Completion Date December 2005]) tempQsim Project Work Package 3 - The general aim of the project is to improve the tools for increasing the efficiency of the integrated water management in the Mediterranean and in semi-arid river catchments. This work is funded by the European Commission and the Swiss Government under the Fifth Framework Programme (EC contract code: EVK1-CT2002-00112).

(March 2005 - Present) SIM-UK - A consortium developing a means to simulate, forecast and plan for the effects of geographical processes and events at the UK national scale. The consortium are currently investigating the issues and targetting funding and can be contacted by email .
(February 2005 - Present) Future Cities - The Grand Challenge over the next 5-10 years is to develop a city simulation package, configurable for different cities, that can be used by a wide variety of interested parties to examine the potential impacts of strategies and scenarios on city development.
(March 2000 - Present [Deadline September 2007]) PhD - A geography of personal injury road accidents in Britain since 1992.

Completed Projects

(August 2004 - July 2005) Sustainable Uplands: Sustainable Upland Management for Multiple Benefits - Combining knowledge from local stakeholders, policy-makers and social and natural scientists to anticipate, monitor and sustainably manage rural change in UK uplands. As a co-investigator Andy's role was to attend meetings and provide advice on implementing and developing a Geographic Information System. This work was funded under the Rural Economy and Land-Use Programme as a Scoping Study (RES-224-25-0088).
(January 2002 - April 2005) DesertLinks Project Work Packages 2.2 and 3.2 - This involved developing a regional degradation index to identify desertification risk and developing a desertification indicator system for Mediterranean Europe. As a research assistant Andy's role was concerned with software development and processing data. This work was funded by the European Commission under the Fifth Framework Programme (EC contract code: EVK2-CT-2001-00109).
(January 2001 - April 2004) MedAction Project Work Package 3.3 - This involved the development of an internet based Geographical Information System geared for the monitoring and analysis of land degradation in the Mediterranean climate region of the European Union. As a principal investigator Andy's role was to manage and advise and be responsible for delivery. This work was funded by the European Commission under the Fifth Framework Programme (EC contract code: EVK2-CT-2000-00085).
(January 2000 - January 2003) SPIN!-project Work Package 5 - This involved the development of geographical data mining methods for investigating patterns in space-time-attribute data. As a research assistant Andy's role was concerned with software development and processing data. This work was funded by the European Commission under the Fifth Framework programme (EC contract code: IST-1999-10536).
(June 1999 - December 1999) Commuting Patterns in Rural Areas - This work involved investigating migration, commuting and transport patterns in Great Britain using the 1991 UK Census of Population. As a research assistant Andy's role was concerned with software development and processing data. This work was funded by the Countryside Agency .
(January 1999 - June 1999) HyperBank Consultancy - This work involved developing new technology and evaluating proprietary data mining systems with respect to geodemographic targetting. The results of this work remain confidential. This research was funded by Capital Bank
(November 1997 - January 1999) MEDALUS III : Regional Indicators Project : Module 9: Regional Economic and Social Approahces to Desertification : Topic 9.1 GIS-based Socio-Economic Modelling at Regional Scale - This work involved developing neuro-computing based methods able to link socio-economic and physical models of land use change and land degradation. As a research assistant Andy's role was concerned with software development and processing data. This work was funded by the European Commission under the Fourth Framework programme (EC contract code: ENV4-CT95-0121).
