Agenda
- No Agenda.
- Main reason for meeting is introduction of Jinyi and to make further progress on the MoSeS transport modelling application.
Notes
- I used the NCeSS Sakai Portal and took notes on My Workspace Wiki.
- NGS chat with Haibo
- He has bee talking with Shiv Kaushal and is planning to use Cardiff large windows based system.
- I wondered if GROWL could help if all the software Haibo wants to use is windows based?
- What is Jinyi doing?
- PhD in transport and traffic management
- Using the Bejing Household Travel Survey
- ~70,000 Household
- ~5% of population
- Looking at traffic flow down to junction level
- Traffic Assignment Model Discussion Lead by Haibo
- OMNITRANS
- Work ongoing in Leeds controlling traffic lights to maximise traffic flow and shorten the distance traffic is travelling...
- I asked about events and the difference between peak flow and flow at other times.
- How is this temporal variation taken into account in the models?
- Haibo explained there are two types of event:
- Planned events
- Ticket sales data is pulled into the model
- I wonder how this is done?
- Is there a queryable web service for us to get events information?
- Unplanned events
- Zoning Systems used in transportation modelling
- What zoning systems is Haibo using?
- Postcodes
- Bespoke boundaries generated by looking at areas and focussing on traffic boundaries and thinking about origin/destination zoning.
- Can we get Haibo's boundaries?
- Yes, he will send those used in Leeds to Andy :-)
- Andy will look at these and think about interpolation and hopefully aggregation from 2001 Census Output Areas.
- There are multiple zoning systems each one is designed specific for any study
- The zoning systems are not automatically generated they are generated based on a geographical type survey by expert transport modellers.
- ~25 years ago Department for Transport tried to do a national survey to define travel areas and develop a trips matrix:
- Haibo told us about this before, the project was regarded as a failure in that the origin-destination trips matrix was unrealistic.
- Haibo thinks the Travel to Work Area work is different.
- This work defined travel zones for all kinds of travel, not just commuting.
- The boundaries may still exist
- These are interesting.
- It would be good if these were available via UKBorders or GRADE!
- Variables wanted and needed for the Transport Modelling Application
- Household Level Car Ownership
- Number of people
- Number of workers
- Do the costs in the assignment model feed into the costs in the gravity model / costs in other stages in traffic modelling.
- Haibo's work with Bohoa Mao(sp?)
- Assessment of sustainable transport structure in Beijing based on planned distribution of residential areas.
- Data on attractors
- We can get number of workers from SWS
- We already have residential population
- What about number of school places?
- Mark has good retail data.
- Miscellaneous notes
- What transport variables are of interest from the HSAR?
- Distance to work
- Mode of Transport
- What can we optimise on from CAS in terms of transport variables?
- Does Haibo need household level data or zone based data?
- Perhaps we should make use of SWS for work based trips?
- Who knows what Dianna Smith did for MoSeS?
- What is next?
- What is Belinda doing?
- Haibo and me agree that Belinda should have been trying as much as possible to use others models and glue lots of demographic modelling work together rather than focus specifically on developing from scratch a new demographic model.
- The collaborative way is the e-Science way!
Actions
- This is probably an incomplete list of actions :-)
- Haibo
- To send Andy a set of boundaries for traffic zones in Leeds.
- To find out how events data is incorporated into traffic models:
- How was this done for Leicester Instrumented City?
- We are interested in being able to automate this, by say querying a web service provided by a local authority.
- This would be of use for emergency repsonse planning as well as general traffic flow modelling.
- Belinda
- Mark
- To organise next meeting.
- Andy
- To look at the boundaries provided by Haibo with a view to aggregating 2001 Census data.
- I wonder if we can use ConvertGrid for this?
- Email link to these notes.
- Jinyi
- To email Andy with URL of his group in China.
