Hyper forward thinking revolutionary genius. Passionate about his subject and stood up to his critics. Stan cared greatly about people and society and tried to make a positive difference applying computational geography for the benefit of us all.
Meeting with Marge Wilson Pro-Dean for Research in the Faculty of Environment
The documentation I am encouraging and instigating the development of was regarded as currently poorly written and easily misinterpreted as a criticism of the current state of our university data.
Politics and university management and communication
My approach to getting a message and support from the top was regarded as being too direct and it was suggested that I go through all layers of management through the School of Geography and School of Computing to the faculty dean level developing the argument and support for the development of Leeds LOD in the process
However, it was noted that there could be another route as Michael Arthur, the University of Leeds Vice Chancellor came to Leeds from the University of Southampton and they being pioneers in this may have a person that he would listen to
The story so far and progress over the summer
I gave a synopsis of my meetings within the university and mentioned
That I was wanting to have a joint meeting with the Library Team and representatives from ISS.
That I had had an informal discussion with Alan Real where he suggested starting off with something smaller scale, perhaps something just in geography and focussing initially on people and organisations.
What is it I want the university to do?
Support the development of university linked data and resource a team to take on the role of developing it
Begin to create the structure and endpoints for the identifiers and the data that refers to them
Raise awareness of the identifiers once they are in place
Reduce the amount of web links that break by using the identifiers
How much resource is needed?
Should this be tackled as a series of small projects, or is it best done as a well resourced project driven from the centre?
JISC Funding
What was it like before when the university had no web pages and someone was trying to encourage this to happen?
