- NeISS Data Meeting
- ...
- Item 1
- I provided a summary of my email and again raised the question of NeISS data storage provision and backup
- Does the project have any resources to buy into data storage and where best to use/deploy them?
- WRG/Scotgrid/NWGrid/other NGS partner data storage
- Cloud/commercial providers
- What different types of data storage do we want?
- Long, medium, short term, backups, online/offline
- Create DVDs (or other portable media) from the LFC stores and post them? Rely on over the wire transfers only?
- Tom to ask John about robot certificate
- Andy to ask June about video demo
- Andy to chase Guy about XML metadata
- Item 2
- Tim says that Paul Lambert emailed about the iRODS at DAMES/Stirling and there is a resource on the NCeSS Sakai Portal : NeISS Worksite about it
- I sent a preparatory email on Item 1
- Email gist with regard Item 1 - Using the ScotGrid LFC to store large simulation results
- ScotGrid has provided us with 2TB of storage for simulation results interfaced as a Logical File Catalog (LFC)
- I do not know for how long this will be available, but it is now on-line and we are using it
- Tom and I plan to now use this storage for developing some GENESIS demographic simulation model results for Leeds (and possibly other cities or larger regions, but Leeds first)
- The aim is to run the simulation (which has daily time steps) for successive annual periods
- Each annual period may be simulated many times using different pseudo random sequences for the stochastic operations (to begin with, we aim to do two and select the result that's output probabilities most closely match input probabilities)
- Once we have a result, we'll figure out the next step
- It depends on how big the result is and how much data about the whole process we can archive
- I was thinking that a result for Leeds might be even 2TB in size for a 10 year simulation
- However, pictures of the result are generally much smaller and it may be these that we want to preserve for longer along with metadata for recreating the full result and other metadata about the result
- These outputs we currently pass back to the user via a portlet as well as being stored in the LFC, but it would be good to automatically store these in the NCeSS Sakai Portal : NeISS Worksite : Resources too
- Looking to the next stage, we are preparing to use Arc1 at Leeds for processing and having configuration to allow the IO - push and pull of results from the LFC
- There are no security issues with the data
- The next steps are for Andy to provide a program to compare two results and report their similarities and suggest which to use for the next annual simulation step.
- Tom is getting set up for the next stage of running on Arc1 and doing IO to the LFC
- In terms of integration, it would be good to automate the caching of results on the NCeSS Sakai Portal : NeISS Worksite : Resources.
- I suggest a demo of the portlet interface developed by Tom at the F2F
- What I think NeISS and GENESIS may need to consider is that social simulations are very data hungry
- 2TB might seem a lot, but if it can only store 1 result...
- What other data storage might be wanted...
- Can we for instance get another 2TB of data storage at Leeds and get this working with the LFC...
- Can we couple in NGS users data storage as part of the LFC?

- Andy Turner's GEOG2300 2010 to 2011 Web Page #Sophie
- Analysing the impact of the Trafford Centre on local retail provision and the characteristics of nearby places
- The Trafford Centre is a large regional retail shopping complex
- It is easily accessed by a relatively new motorway and has a large catchment area
- Since it has opened there has been increased competition for nearby shopping centres which are thought to have largerly shrunk although some are thriving by reconfiguring as grocery/convenience and to support the local community and less mobile populations
- There are lots of impacts to local residents and business and this project is to explore some of this with reference to changing retail function
- Some impacts may have positive and negative aspects
- This dissertation is aiming to produce a geographical map of the current and historical retail provision in the Trafford region focussing on the changes of nearby local centres
