- CSAP Meeting
- 2011 Census Data and Dissemination
- Seminar lead by Oliver Duke-Williams
- Background
- Why census?
- 1801 first UK census, repeated every 10 years
- Organised by parish and drew together data on birth and deaths and population counts
- 1841 transition to modern census
- Forms sent to individual households
- 2011 Census
- Date - March 27th 2011
- Students generally assumed to be at place of learning
- Census forms to be sent out by post and returned by post
- Requires an address register which is being developed by ONS
- Supposed to be for sole use of the exercise of posting forms and not available for re-use
- This is a massive waste and also if it is not archived then what?
- Optional on-line completion of form
- May improve completeness, but introduce bias...
- New questions
- For people born outside UK
- Year and month of most recent entry to the UK
- (In 1971 there was a similar question, but it asked for year of first entry
- For migrants of the last 12 months
- How long do you plan to stay?
- Second residences (but not in Scotland)
- No detailed census output table plan as yet
- Default plan to repeat 2001
- Disclosure Control
- Output formats
- API data feeds
- Allows data to be drawn into social network media etc...
- RDF tripple store
- Nice map of TFL data on tube train locations :-)

- Emailed Malcolm Atkinson...
- Emailed the following ideas for two articles to submit for publication in peer reviewed journals with ISI impact factor ratings within 3 months to Line Manager and NeISS Principal Investigator and Director of Research:
- Papers based on GENESIS/NeISS work (which is still on-going...)
- I have not approached any of the suggested authors as yet
- NeISS Web Services for GENESIS Demographic Models
- (Suggested authorship) Rob Allan, Mark Birkin, Jianhui Jin, Jason Lander, Bill Lin, Nick Malleson, Richard Sinnott, Paul Townend, Andy Turner, John Watt, Belinda Wu
- Abstract
- Article detailing NeISS web services for GENESIS demographic models.
- An output from both the NeISS and GENESIS projects.
- There are two types of GENESIS demographic models being developed by the team at the University of Leeds: those with a time step of a year (Wu, Birkin, Rees 2008); and those with a time step of a day (Turner 2010).
- These models are still under development and the development and details of the models are not provided.
- The development of the Web Services has been done with the Netbeans Integrated Development Environment by a team based at the University of Leeds.
- The deployment of the web services is first targetted to a LifeRay portal instance running on the NGS.
- The web services have also been deployed to the NCeSS Sakai portal by the team at Daresbury.
- Secure access is handled by technology developed at NeSC Glasgow.

- Constraining GENESIS Traffic Simulation Models
- (Suggested authorship) Andy Turner
- Abstract
- Basic GENESIS traffic models that route individual people agents using Open Street Map data have been produced (Turner 2010).
- This article details work on imposing constraints on the traffic.
- Such constraints are needed to make simulation results more realistic although testing how good the simulation results are is not covered.

- GENESIS Demographic Modelling
- (Suggested authorship) Mark Birkin, Andy Turner, Belinda Wu
- Abstract
- Demographic models deal with populations, births and deaths.
- There are two types of GENESIS demographic models being developed by the GENESIS team at the University of Leeds: those with a time step of a year (Birkin, Rees, Wu 2009); and those with a time step of a day (Turner 2010).
- The models with a step of a year have been developed since 2005 and have dealt with migration since 2006.
- The models with a step of a day have been developed since 2008 and work on incorporating migration began in 2010.
- This article is to focus on developing basic models without migration, to models that incorporate this concept.
- Migration involves populations moving spatially and for this modelling we attempt to detail the spatial locations and their changes over time with reference to places of residence.
