- Publication plans meeting with Mark
- For the REF exercise 4 publications for each person are wanted:
- Each publication can only be cited once within each unit of assessment.
- First authored, peer reviewed articles in ISI rated Journals are preferred (can be regarded as gold standard)
- Census date is likely to be in 2012
- http://www.hefce.ac.uk/pubs/hefce/2009/09_38/
- The School of Geography are to choose if individuals publication records will be part of REF submission.
- Other forms of non-gold standard publication may be considered, all considerations are likely to be based on a subjective quality assessment of an individual.
- It is the push for gold standard which encourages us to plan now as these type of publication traditionally take much longer to be processed than for example publishing at conferences.
- Mark was of the opinion that we could publish the same work both at a conference and again in a journal
- I didn't think that was best practice, seeing it as either or.
- ISGC
- GENESIS Abstract
- Mark keen to develop two further publications from this, a key one is based on the transport model.
- Early bird registration ends on the 2010-02-05
- It would be good to know if I am going before then.
- Discussion about content and modelling progress
- Epidemiology - Flu, Foot and Mouth
- Mike Murphy
- Reality Mining MIT
- Using Twitter/OMB data to feed activity models
- Plasc and other school/shopping data
- I should focus on developing the models - the transport model in particular.
- This discussion should continue and we should identify specific targets of where to publish.

- Half Way Tutors Meeting
- Agenda
- General
- Set menu or a la carte: A number of people, including AE, have expressed a desire for a prescriptive menu for tutorials at levels 1 and 2. The current module outlines are fairly detailed, but are not thought to go far enough. The points Andy makes are that students complain of disparity of treatment and that there are lots of examples of good practice and these should be shared. Others have indicated to me that they prefer to set their own tutorial plans and are opposed to a one-size-fits-all approach. Maybe a compromise position is to have a set menu but allow an a la carte selection. In this case, what elements should everyone be covering?
- Wikipedia: What advice should we give about its use?
- Essays: How many essays should students write? Clearly, the number of assessed essays is set but should students be allowed to write more than the set number.
- GEOG1300
- Feedback on lectures: I would like to know if tutors have specific, constructive feedback on the lectures. Do tutors have a view on the lectures?
- Feedback on skills portfolio workbook: The same questions for the skills portfolio workbook.
- Leeds for life: Any views?
- Other things we should be doing in GEOG1300?
- GEOG2300 and GEOG2350 (apologies if this is mainly 2300 related)
- Link with GEOG2310 Ideas in HG/ GEOG2320 Ideas in PG: We have a number of students taking GEOG 2300 and 2350 who are JH students and have chosen not to take the respective Ideas modules. Should we attempt to end this because of complications it can cause when planning module content and setting essay titles? If we were to do this we would have to stop using the tutorial modules to support the ideas modules.
- Essay questions: Related to this (and relevant to 2300 if not to 2350) is the question of essay titles. Should we be setting tutees essay titles that might give them an advantage in the exam? Indeed, is there any point in setting them so early in the semester essay titles drawing on the Idea module when perforce little has yet been covered. Perhaps the essays might cover only the first half of the module and the exam the second half?
- Literature review: In 2300, as of this year there are two types of literature review on offer, one is much broader but related more closely to conceptual approaches introduced in the Ideas module. The other attempts to get students to relate conceptual approaches to the literature drawn from other modules they are studying. Do people like these two options? Is one better than the other?
- Please bring other issues for discussion to the meeting.
- Notes
- General
- Students being able to set some of their own essay titles is important
- This sort of thing is not in tune with the more prescriptive advice coming from Andy Evans
- Essay titles can be vetted and graded in terms of difficulty as with other exercises
- Every academic staff should have a first and second year tutorial group.
- How do we allocate people to tutor groups in the second and third year?
- This is done by Diane trying to strike a gender balance
- We considered various ways of how to do this better.
- The major concerns in changing this are dangers of exclusion and the amount of work to do it well.
- Wikipedia - We should be encouraging its use and development, but there is still resistance to citing articles from it...
