- CheckAndFormat code seems to be working for filling in the missing results from the UK Population Initialisation runs :-)
- Now is perhaps a good time to release a latest version of my MoSeS source code.
- I next want to recalculate where there is a discrepancy in the Communal Establishment Population Size.
- Once this is done the result needs saving and making available online.
- I'd like to reload this first result and:
- Produce some profile type graph output for Derbyshire.
- Produce some profile type graph output for the UK.
- Push for further optimisation and save another result.
- Then I'd like to adapt the fitness function using CASKS015 and other tables with tranport variables to try to create another new result to keep the tranport researchers happy.
- I will get on with preparing for this last bit first while I wait for my PC to grind out some missing results...

- Skype Meeting with June Finch to chat about progress and the project generally and clarify percentage of work complete on Work Package 4.1 deliverables for which The University of Leeds are responsible:
- Again with the work done on Work Package 4.1 by The University of Leeds, the story is that more resources will improve this.
- We are necessarily working to a minimum requirement due to financial resource restrictions.
- We are able to allocate further manpower to the project as MoSeS completes and GENESIS starts.
- June is planning to convene a Project Board Meeting to start dialogue about resource allocation for those parts as yet unassigned and to consider what to do if partners are unable to spend their allocations.

- Advice from Peter Halfpenny:
- The ESRC has a national data strategy:
- The ESRC are commissioning a Secure Data Service and an Administrative Data Liaison Service:
- There has been talk of a Spatial Data Service too.
- There was an NDS-NCeSS workshop on secure access to confidential data.
- The ESRC is developing an International Data Strategy.
- The data strategies are part of the overall ESRC strategy:
- There is a useful ppt presentation about the resources part of the strategy:
- The NCRM ADMIN Node has an emphasis on data:
- The NCeSS DAMES Node is relevant too:

- Junaid has made progress with the GLS on the NGS :-)
- WPS issues reported on 2008-07-18 have been resolved and Get Capabilities and Execute Request tests have been performed and they seem to work fine.
- Output GML is located in /opt/gls/apache-tomcat5.5.23/webapps/ROOT/GLSResult
- XML Get Capabilities response is in /opt/gls/apache-tomcat5.5.23/bin/gc.xml
- XML Execute Request response is in /opt/gls/apache-tomcat5.5.23/bin/er.xml
- export JAVA_HOME=/opt/gls/java/jdk1.5.0_15/

- Paul provided me a copy of his SLD generation code :-)
- I provided him with a copy of the classfication code from geotools lite that I developed :-)

- Meeting with Wei Jie and Junaid Arshad about Security and GLS
- Wei and Junaid have drafted a work plan for about 6 months work starting in October.
- This will be finalised and passed to June and myself in the next few weeks.
- A draft publication on security work has been accepted for publication
- A final version is to be sent by 2008-07-28
- Andy to read and edit this before this date.
- Setting up development environments for this work.
- NCeSS VM is nearly ready.
- NGS VM is nearly ready:
- We are experiencing problems with the connection to the NGS VM sometimes:
- Usually waiting a few minutes and trying again everything is OK
- proxy-demo-0.1 that Junaid installed with Ally in the OGSA-DAI training is not really working:
- Junaid is looking into this and will report next week
- NGS Security
- Discussion of the distinction between security and monitoring:
- Junaid's view seemed to be that the security is to allow/deny access, but that it was up to NGS to provide something that would communicate with our service to manage users resource allocation.
- This week I emailed Mike Jones and Chris Higgins about this.
- In terms of security infrastructure, both Geode and GLS are to be used as applications to test this :-)

- GLS Meeting with Paul
- What is wrong with linking Scottish data?
- DatasetGeolinkageField not having the same name in the attribute and geometry data?
- It seems like the WFS serves out linkage fields called: name, label and gros_label.
- The GDAS is probably serving out attribute data with a linkage field called: ons_label
- I suspect that rendering the scottish data has never worked.
- There are various ways forward, but any are going to involve modifying the GLS server.
- Hopefully though, because the geometry is being returned the NeSC Glasgow guys can do the security work.
- Another problem is running out of memory, which we tried to fix temporarily by configuring to allow more than the defaul amount of memory to be used.
- It still seemed that this could still be an issue, but first problem is really to fix things so we can produce output for Scotland.

- Review of the National Strategy for Data Resources for Research in the Social Sciences
- http://www.esrc.ac.uk/nds
- Consultation of data users organised around four core questions:
- What, in your opinion, are the key social science challenges facing the UK over the next 5 years?
- What large-scale data sources, in your opinion, need to be developed to support social science research over the next 5 years?
- In your opinion, are there any existing large-scale data resources that are currently not accessible for social science research, but, if exploited, could potentially be utilised to further research in a particular area? Please name the source of the data where possible and note the potential uses.
- What do you consider to be the greatest barriers that might prevent the data resources needed for social science research being available?
- My answers to these:
- What, in your opinion, are the key social science challenges facing the UK over the next 5 years?
- Breaking down the barriers to allow existing data to be explored to uncover potential uses.
- Getting the majority of the public to sign up so that data stored about them can be integrated for the benefit of society.
- Developing a catalog of all the data that exist and with details of what is currently available and under what conditions.
- Developing a means of integrating/accessing all the data for exploratory work.
- Exploring the integrated data resource to try to work out what it can be used for.
- Developing a way to make available derived work.
- What large-scale data sources, in your opinion, need to be developed to support social science research over the next 5 years?
- Government, police, health, education and general environmental data (Ordnance Survey etc...).
- Developing access to commercial data on customers people
- I would like it to be mandatory for a national collection of geographical information (detailed spatial and temporal reference of location) about any insurance claim to be made publibly available, in particular information about road accident claims and flood damage claims.
- In your opinion, are there any existing large-scale data resources that are currently not accessible for social science research, but, if exploited, could potentially be utilised to further research in a particular area? Please name the source of the data where possible and note the potential uses.
- Data from Social Networking sites.
- Other commercial data from store cards/lifestyle databases.
- What do you consider to be the greatest barriers that might prevent the data resources needed for social science research being available?
- Lack of details and awareness of what exists.
- Social Science is so hard because so little data is available for it. If by default all data was available, this would overcome this problem, but create another in that what can be disseminated and to what organisations. By default the data is not made available for research.
- Lack of confidence and appropriate security for the creation and use of big brother data.
