- Student migration
- People migrate in to universities from broad catchments although each university has its own catchment.
- Choosing some small areas known to have high proportions of students one can use the SMS to look at the difference between in-migration and out migration in terms of destination.
- In my experience, most people migrate out from student accomodation either into parts of the city for a short term before moving on again. The majority of the student migrants move to London, a more regional city, or back to one or other partners origin.
- Disclosure control for 2011
- A waste!
- ONS are considering obfuscating the data in various ways:
- Record swapping
- Over-imputation
- ABS perturbation
- All these methods have severe implications for data and interaction data are no exception, indeed for these it is generally a massive introduction of error rendering the data useless for a vast number of potentailly very important applications!
- Special licensing might solve the probelm in giving access to the unperturbed data for some applications.
- Census data feed network.
- 2011 census innovations.
- Questions
- Some I thought of but didn't ask:
- In my experience, most people migrate out from student accomodation either into parts of the city for a short term before moving on again. The majority of the student migrants move to London, a more regional city, or back to one or other partners origin.
- What data catches this?
- Perhaps some longitudinal data has migration histories? - But I doubt it is complete enough to get something adequate. What about alumni data?
- Two questions I asked:
- What metadata or additional data pre-disclosure control (if there is no access to the undisclosure controlled data) should be avialable?
- - e.g. what proportion of flows are 1, 2, 3, etc...
- What measures are important to know for uncertainty analysis of interaction data?
- Oli answered that it he would ask primarily for all the total ward flows.
- Seems senisble to me, but I'd be wanting lots more too as I'm sure Oli would. Indeed I'm sure we would both rather have access to the undisclosure controlled data.
- Metadata versioning? What standard metadata for each bit of data? Dublin core? DDI?
- They are looking at SDMX (some statistical data markup XML?) but DDI would probably be better.

* On 2007-11-15 [Andy Turner] managed to edit the Home Page of the Old (First) NCeSS Wiki replacing the text "NCeSS Wiki" with the following:
** It seems that this wiki is being decommissioned. There is a Wiki tool available to all users of the NCeSS portal http://www.ncess.ac.uk/portal. Hopefully the useful information from this wiki will migrate to the new wiki and be made publicly avialable. This wiki is going to die! Long live the new NCeSS Wiki!

h3 Developing Deliverable Specifications
* As of 2007-12-04 this is still on-going. [Mike Daw] has made it clear on several occasions that it is more important to deliver some e-Infrastructure than to stick with the words in the proposal and that the work done under this work package can be respecified respectfully. It is not even necessary to stick with the same titles or number of deliverables as in the [draft deliverable specification|Delspecs4.1].
* First draft deliverable specifications were compiled by [Mike Daw] following vists to Leeds and Aberdeen. These were made available via the portal wiki and are to be developed out of draft status. the respective Wiki pages are listed below along with information about changes:
** [D4.1.1 (Aberdeen) - Grid-enabling of Simulation Models|D4.1.1.A]

- Alice Walton's BSc Dissertation
- Alice is doing a work placement at the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service Authority (WYFRA) and has been offered access to a Fire Incident Database and would rather do a dissertation on that than on the subject she has already written a proposal for.
- WYFRA incident reporting has dramatically improved in the last 12 months and by end of January a years worth of good quality data will be available to Alice for analysis.
- We had a brain storm about what Alice might look for in the data specifically of geospatial and environmental interest.
- I think it is a good proposal to explore the data with this focus although I am no authority on this.
- Other data that might be useful: Roads (e.g. Ordnance Survey MasterMap); flooding, road traffic, fire coverage and other WYFRA and broader region data...
- In the past year natural fires on moorland have probably not been so much of an issue because it has been unusually wet.
- There were some floods in the region, so how did these effect coverage and demand?
- How about looking generally at changing accessibility?
- Accessibility and exposure are issues for much environmental modelling work.
- Accessibility, coverage and response times are linked.
- The more stretched a Fire and Rescue Service becomes, the slower its response and lower its capability becomes for tackling new incidents.
- Which parts of the road network are critical?
- How will the proposed new helicopters help.
- We talked about the overlap of fire service administrative and coverage areas.
- We talked about urban infilling and BIMBY:
- Conceivably another issue with urban infilling is increased risk of fires spreading to nearby buildings?
- I gave Alice a copy of OGC OWS phase 3 DVD thinking that it had relevance to disaster management and she might find it interesting to think about interoperability.
- There is useful infomration online about WYFRA and its operations including:
- MASS meeting
- Tutorial organised by Andy Evans on reflection and XML in Java:
- SoG
- (4 Week 3rd year undergraduate) Work Placement Ideas for Helen Durham
- Helen came asking about if there was any MoSeS related work that I could think of that would be suitable.
- I suggested instead an investigation into assessing what geospatial data exists in the university of Leeds.
- This would involve understanding what metadata is for geospatial data.
- It would follow on from the work I am doing with Ant on using the Go-Geo! metadata creation tool.
- Are there geospatial data held at the university that are either not licenced, or which the provenance is unknown?
