Introduction
- This Web Page is for organising my information about the NCeSS Show Case 2007. Manchester, UK. 2007-03-27 to 2007-03-29.

Notes

- I just missed Paul Dolby talking about Resource Discovery for Researchers in e-Social Science (ReDReSS)
- He commented that it was the first time he had been on the other end of the camera per se and looked like he was glad it was over.
- Digital Record
- Failed to get the name of the presenter then and not managed to find the information online yet...
- Uncle Roy All Around You
- "Where the console game breaks out onto the streets; a game that pitches Online Players around the world alongside players on the real streets of the city.
- Street Players use handheld computers to search for Uncle Roy, using the map and incoming messages to move through the city. Online Players cruise through a virtual map of the same area, searching for Street Players to help them find a secret destination.
- Using web cams, audio and text messages players must work together. They have 60 minutes and the clock is ticking..."
- Nice demo and discussion, though I started thinking that may every move was about to be filmed and every twitch and eye movement analysed. I still managed to remain calm although the horror was there!
- MoSeS

- Slides:
- First time being filmed and standing there I was more nervous than normal.
- I jibbered and don't think I presented well.
- Feedback, Discussion and questions
- I should never ask an audience again if any of them are e-Social Scientists!
- Thank you man from Digital Record who's name I didn't catch, I have learned and will try to avoid name calling in the future.
- If I had attended for the full 3 days I would have known who the audience were, I should have at least apologised for that, but in fact I made no apologies at all but probably should have done.
- Modelling, simulation and visualisation expectations are high, how can we collaborate with the makers of computer games and the likes of Google so that our work has an impact comensurate with the work and effort that has gone into developing it?
- Paul Tennet from Digital Record kindly came and said he was interested in the way we are working and agreed that collaborating with the game developers would be good, but that neither of us knew how to do it.
- He mentioned that Will Wright was working on doing Sim for Real or something.
- It would be great to be able to contribute and learn from this...
- This was not a practiced thing and I'm not happy with the way it went.
- I don't think my performance will add anything much to the slides. I am concerned that ReDReSS might waste valuable resources trying to make this better. I was more nervous than normal with the camera pointed at me and found it hard to concentrate and failed to make many of the points I had planned. In the main I fell over the slides a bit. For sure it was good practice and if it happens again I expect to cope better.
- I had half a mind to withdraw my consent so that they don't waste your time on this, but then I thought again and trusted that they would exercise their judgement on this.
- 3 good ideas a day discussion :)
- Talking blogs with Andy
- How am I going to develop my blog?
- I want to use tags more, what can I do?
- Can I have tags like:
- MoSeS; that probably appears in the code more like; <http://www.geog.leeds.ac.uk/people/a.turner/projects/moses>MoSeS</http://www.geog.leeds.ac.uk/people/a.turner/projects/moses>
- Maybe in the head of the html I link to a file for tags which maps them onto something more compact like:
- MoSeS; that probably appears in the code more like; <MoSeS>MoSeS</MoSeS>
- Maybe I should look at some RDF documents and work out how to do this.
- Policy Grid
- GeoVUE
- Andy Hudson-Smith
- Fantastic!
- Google Map Creator Version 2 is sounding very good...
- Goodgle Maps Image Cutter Tool - useful!
- A lady mentioned that a group of Pathololgists she knows would be interested in this and she plans to contact Andy :)
- I wonder how these software are cutting things up and if Grids is similar or useful in any way...
- I really should have find more time to work on this
- I think what is needed first is a streaming image file writer...
- Real time feeds
- Key Collaboration
- Edoardo to send me some information and tools for developing a use case...
- Asked Andy for the source code for Google Map creator and explained that Paul would be in contact.
- Andy very keen for us to have this and develop our collaboration so that we can present information about this at an NCeSS meeting in June.
- Some thinking on important things in e-Social Science that I did on the train:
- Exposing data and developing data integration services
- Metadata
- Usually even if the data are confidential, the metadata about these is not.
- Services that integrate data can be developed if the metadata are exposed appropriately regardless if any data is available to test.
- Specifically what input data are we using?
- Version numbers, release dates
- Opening up software
- With source code one can step through a program and analyse it to understand what is hapening
- Anyone doing eResearch in an open way has to be using and developing open source tools
- Collaboration
- This takes time and effort but if we can do it well we can keep up with developments
- Semantic Web
- How do your projects and organsiations interact with others
- Opening up Research
- How does it really work?
- Introspection
- What are the information flows that drive and facilitate the process?
- From describing workflow and developing use and test cases to automation
- Provenance and results replicability
- Simulation results need to be replicable at the push of a button
- Enabling
- What questions or research can we now do as a result of technology and data developments.
