Regression Analysis
This web page is going to look at regression analysis on SPSS.  It will endeveour to explain
how to use regression analysis in SPSS and show you how to carry it out.

Regression analysis is used to specifiy and test a functional relationship between variables.

Regressiona analysis provides us with a simplified view of  relationships between variables:

Linear regression uses just one independent variable, we wish to fit a  straight line between the data points.

The independant variable is the variable that we manipulate
The dependant varibale will later as a consequence of the the manipulation of the independant varibale.

the equation for this is:

where:

= the predicted value of the dependant variable

x = the observed value of the indepnet variable
a = the intercept
b = the slope of the line

to calculate this in SPSS follow these wonderful instructions....

1. Enter the data  into 2 columns.  Named appriopately.

2. Click on analysis then regression, and then linear.  As shown below in Figure 1

Figure 1.

3.  Within the box select the independant variable and use the arrow key to move it into the box titled depenedant.
Move the independent variable to the box labeled independant.
These can be seen below in Figure 2.

Figure 2

4.  Clicking on statistics, plots and save can produce addtional outputs.  Under save Items useful additional information includes
predicted values residuals and confidence intervals associated with x and y.  See Figure 3.

Figure 3

5.  Clicking OK on linear regression will perform the regression analysis this produces a regression of the dependent variable
vs the independent variable.  Output will consised of the variables entered or removed, model summary including R and R square,
Anova statistics and coefficients.  For an example see Figure 4.

The finishes the stage on regression the following page dicussess the use of multiply regression.
